      • Résumé :
?is work has been written in consequence of the great interest excited by my article, under the same title, which appeared simultaneously in the Fortnightly Review and the New York Independent. Two friends who read the manuscript were of opinion that a volume, in which the evidence could be given much more fully, would be desirable, and the result of the publication of the article confirmed their view. I was led to a study of the subject when writing four new chapters on Astronomy for a new edition of the Wonderful Century. I then found that almost all writers on general astronomy, from Sir John Herschel to Professor Simon Newcomb and Sir Norman Lockyer, stated, as an indisputable fact, that our sun is situated in the plane of the great ring of the Milky Way, and also very nearly in the centre of that ring. The most recent researches also showed that there was little or no proof of there being any stars or nebul? very far beyond the Milky Way, which thus seemed to be the limit, in that direction, of the stellar universe....

        Biographie:
it is a philosophical inquiry into humanity's place in the grand scheme of existence. Wallace's arguments are grounded in the scientific knowledge of his day, yet they resonate with timeless questions about our origins and destiny. The themes of this work are as relevant today as they were over a century ago. Wallace's exploration of extraterrestrial life and the conditions that make Earth habitable invites readers to reflect on the delicate balance that sustains life on our planet. By considering the vastness of the universe and the potential for other worlds, Wallace encourages a broader perspective on our place in the cosmos. Through his detailed analysis, Wallace offers readers a journey into the unknown, prompting a reevaluation of humanity's significance in the universe. His work provides a foundation for modern discussions on astrobiology and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. By engaging with Wallace's insights, we gain a deeper understanding of the universe and our role within it....

        Sommaire:
Is humanity alone in the vast expanse of the cosmos? Alfred Russel Wallace, a pioneering thinker of the 19th century, delves into this profound question in Man's Place in the Universe. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly advancing scientific era, Wallace's work explores the intersection of astronomy, philosophy, and the human condition. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were a time of great scientific discovery, with new technologies allowing humanity to peer deeper into the universe than ever before. Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of natural selection, applies his analytical mind to the cosmos, questioning the uniqueness of Earth and the potential for life beyond our planet. In this scientific exploration, Wallace challenges the prevailing notions of his time, engaging with the latest astronomical findings and theories. He meticulously examines the conditions necessary for life and the likelihood of their occurrence elsewhere in the universe. This work is not merely a scientific treatise...
