      • Biographie:
Gene Stratton-Porter (1863-1924) was an American novelist, naturalist, photographer, and early conservationist whose fiction brought the landscapes of Indiana's Limberlost Swamp to a wide popular readership. Her books combine romance, moral development, close observation of birds and wildflowers, and a deep affection for the natural world. Stratton-Porter became one of the most widely read American authors of the early twentieth century, and her work helped make nature writing and conservation themes accessible to general readers through emotionally engaging fiction. Her best-known novels include Freck,A,The Har, Laddie, and Micah. In these works, she often wrote about young people, outsiders, self-reliance, personal dignity, and the healing force of nature. Stratton-Porter's Limberlost novels remain especially important for readers interested in classic American fiction, women writers, regional literature, inspirational storytelling, and the literary relationship between popular fiction and environmental awareness....

        Sommaire:
A foundling with only one hand, no family, and no place in the world is given a chance to prove himself in the dangerous beauty of the Limberlost. Freckles, an orphan raised without affection or certainty about his origins, takes work guarding valuable timber in the Indiana swamp, where loneliness, courage, criminal danger, and unexpected friendship reshape his life. In the forest he discovers not only birds, flowers, and hidden wonders, but also the possibility that honour, kindness, and self-command may matter more than birth or fortune. Gene Stratton-Porter's Freckles is a classic American novel of resilience, romance, nature, and moral courage. Blending adventure, sentimental fiction, coming-of-age drama, and regional storytelling, it follows a young outsider who must confront timber thieves, social prejudice, physical hardship, and his own fear that he is unworthy of love. The novel's famous Limberlost setting gives the story its atmosphere, but its lasting appeal lies equally in Freckles himself: vulnerable, brave, principled, and determined to become more than the world has allowed him to be. First published in 1904, Freckles became one of Stratton-Porter's defining works and remains closely linked with A Girl of the Limberlost, her conservation-minded fiction, and her broader body of popular American novels. It is well suited for readers of classic American fiction, inspirational fiction, orphan stories, early twentieth-century women writers, nature writing, regional literature, and young adult crossover classics....
