Dubbed the only contemporary designer to have achieved "rockstar status" Philippe Starck is a genius awash in equal measures of praise and controversy. Fiercely modern (some say "sci-fi") yet wary of progress, cagily self-promoting yet scornful of the press, Starck has built a design empire on a foundation of exuberant contradictions. Biographie:
Conway Lloyd Morgan is a freelance writer based in London. He is a regular contributor ta Graphics International magazine, and was general editor of the International Design Yearbook from 1995 to 1997. His most recent book is Jean Nouvel : the elements of Architecture, published by Universe. He worked with Philippe Starck on the 1997 International Design Yearbook and has since written on Starck's work for design magazines.
